Nabiac 1925 - About a hundred of the surviving founding settlers were invited and attended a two day celebration in the form of a "Pioneer's Carnival" to honour their contribution to the district. Cr. Hugh McKinnon, in replying to a toast on behalf of the pioneers, stated -
"He was pleased to see so many pioneers present. The banquet had been a been a splendid success. He complimented the association on the happy thought which promoted the entertainment. It showed that they were mindful of those who went before and those who blazed the track. He could go as far back as anyone present, as a resident of the Wallamba. His father took up Glen Ora in 1862, and the whole of the pioneering prosperity could date back to the Land Act of 1861. The Bill then became operative in 1862, and his father was the first in the Manning Shire to take advantage of it. Some of the children went to school on Taree Estate (Tarree Farms School) - there was no Taree school then. His father did not remove to the farm until 1865. It took four days to go from Taree Estate to Glen Ora. There was no proper road. His father brought the first bullock dray to Wallamba. Four bullocks were attached to a dray, in which was a lot of furniture, and some of the children. Following behind was a slide pulled by two bullocks. The first day they got as far as Peg Leg Creek, the next to Kundibakh, the following day to the flat near where Nabiac now is, and the next day they reached home. All along the road they found people hospitable and kind. His father had to cut the road from Larry's Flat down the Wallamba, and also the track out to the new home. The track was practically the same as where the road now went. In 1862 the only other settler was George Riley, who also came from Taree Estate."
"Nearly all the Wallamba pioneers came from the Manning and Hawkesbury Rivers. Riley took a place which had a good river frontage. In 1863 John Nixon, the grandfather of James Nixon who was present, took a place opposite the speaker's home. Other pioneers in 1863 were George Greenaway, Joseph Clerkin, Heinrich Beisler, and John Dargaville. In 1864 Murdoch McIntosh, John Breckenridge, grandfather of Mr. J. W. Breckenridge, and John McQueen, (all of Forster), came up to the Wallamba. Up the river were Joseph Basham, James McCann, John Slyney, James Mead, Henry Alway, and James Smith. In 1865 William Croker, Joseph Franklin and Michael Gleeson came. In 1866 James Bowers and William Startin and Owen Matheson settled. Later the place came to be opened up. The first school in the Wallamba was a half time school at Dargaville's Crossing. It had walls and roof of bark."
"The pioneers went through a lot of hard times. They had plenty of corn,
milk and honey, and on this they chiefly lived. As the oak grew stronger
when subjected to strong breezes, so men grew strong when subjected to
hard times. The speaker was 70 in May last and still felt hearty and smart.
He had healthy parents and a hardy bringing up. This gave longer life,
and, more enjoyment of it. Many of the old pioneers were not present. They
had gone before. It would not be right to pass by without alluding to those
who had died in the struggle. They would bear them in mind at this, the
first pioneers' gathering."
The above extract from "Nabiac and District - chronicles of the early days", a new book by Rod and Wendy Gow, newspaper archivists, compiled of articles written by journalists of the time from 1865 through to 1936, encompassing Nabiac, Failford, Bullock Wharf, Darawank, Krambach, Dyer's Crossing, and surrounding districts, gives an insight of the settlement and advancement of this important district.
These early settlers, on their arrival to the Nabiac district, were faced with a beautiful country ranging from rich alluvial river flats through to dense timbered forests, and as a dedicated group of people, with aspirations of turning their own farms, and the whole district, into a place where they could raise their families and earn a decent living, did what pioneers are famous for, and set about achieving these goals. They built their residences and tilled their land, and it was not too long before commercial premises, timber mills and schools were erected. They were adamant that they were there to stay - and if they needed a particular building for the betterment of the residents, they set about achieving that goal as a community effort, wholeheartedly supporting the project with donations of money, expertise and labour. Through their endeavours they established churches, entertainment venues, lodges, and agricultural associations, a school of arts, halls, dramatic and amusement societies, and football, cricket and tennis clubs - all important adjuncts to the lifestyle they required.
Persistence - and refusing to take no for an answer from officialdom
- was just part of the character of the Wallamba River settlers. As an
example of this trait, early in 1886 the people of Darawank wanted a school
established and approached the Government for this much needed centre of
education - but officialdom refused the request. They persisted with letters,
petitions, and urging their local M.P. - undeterred by the continuous refusals
from the Government body, and after three years of almost continuous agitation
the Government, in July, 1889 eventually conceded to their requests - it
took over three years but their endurance would not be quashed.

Mitchell's Island - chronicles of the early days

The early pioneers of Mitchell's Island, with great determination and
perseverance, were committed to carve out a lifestyle on one of the most
fertile areas of land on the lower Manning River - and they succeeded.
The establishment of two separate timber mills by George Scott and Henry Booth on the banks of Scott's Creek gave extra employment to the families on Mitchell's Island and nearby districts, and ship building soon followed.
The welfare of the children of the island was obviously a concern to Henry Booth, as he employed Mr. L'Estrange as a school teacher at the Summer Hill sawmill for the children on the island in 1865 - four years before the Government school was established.
It did not take long before the oyster industry took its first steps. This industry, in the first half of 1871 shipped over 1,800 bags of oysters to market, supplying the much prized bivalves to a voracious city market, where Manning River oysters were considered to be of the finest quality, outranking those sourced from all other rivers.
Isolated on an island, with all supplies and produce coming and going by water, the early settlers began pushing the Government for ferry services. After a long battle with officialdom the Government, in 1876, placed £1,000 on the government estimates to establish ferry services connecting Mitchell's Island with Oxley Island and Cundletown.
The residents of Mitchell's Island established other necessities of life such as a church, school of arts, post office and sporting venues. They conducted flower shows and horse racing, all of which gave these pioneers the lifestyle they required.
The farmers' main staple was maize, but they were not adverse to diversifying into other crops, such as wheat, which was soon abandoned - the result of rust affecting crops - and sugar cane, which was initially successful enough to erect a sugar mill, and which continued until the early 1880s.
The big change in lifestyle came in 1892, at the start of the worst depression since the 1840s, when the Lower Manning Dairy Company established a butter factory on Mitchell's Island at the confluence of Scott's Creek and the Manning River, opposite Croki. By 1910 this factory had 500 suppliers and the Sydney Morning Herald wrote -
"A few years ago who would have predicted life on the Manning as it is now ? It is a case of before dairying and after dairying. Years ago farmers relied on maize, they put all their eggs in one basket. It was a lazy as well as a risky game, but they were content. And as disastrous floods came and swept everything bare, the farmers once more leaned on the local bank and the storekeeper. But in the fullness of time came dairying. At the outset, it was very unpopular, and, unprofitable. The farmer is always a slow mover, and cows meant hard, persistent work, with method in it. But the more adaptable of the old hands saw in the new industry a sure road to solvency, and despite drawbacks, which even this admirable centre has, its hosts of dairy farmers have now substantial, well improved properties, attractive homes, and ready money wherewith to purchase a few luxuries. The majority, too, live well, and the remainder could if they so desired. This is how life on the Manning River has changed, and instead of the poor 'cocky' who tramped into Taree or Wingham with an empty purse, we see him today, in a stylish sulky turnout, and a cheque book bulging out of his pockets."
These articles are an interesting insight into the pioneers and later
generations who settled on Mitchell's Island, giving glimpses of the history
of not just this island but also surrounding localities. They are written
by early journalists who, in recording current affairs of the time, supply
us with our much sought-after history and provide at the same time a fascinating
account of everyday life as it once was on the Manning River.
