A new local history book, "Coopernook - chronicles of the early days", has been launched by Rod and Wendy Gow, Manning River Times archivists, compiled of transcribed newspaper articles collected by them commencing in 1862 through to 1937. These articles, written as current affairs at the time, are now part of our local history, and give an insight into the residents and development of Coopernook and surrounding districts.
In 1905 a Sydney Morning Herald correspondent wrote the following lines regarding Coopernook - "The little town of Coopernook is the northern gate to the Manning River. It hugs the bank of the Lansdowne River and shares that very genial complaint, the splitting of the township. It is the old, old story - the Government town and the private town, but here there is a variation. Each was too strong to be beaten. It is easy for an outsider to see which should be the township - but it might not be safe to mention it. Coopernook is proud of its timber industry, of its shipbuilding, and of its leading citizens, and certainly the general stamp is high. It is apparent that the spread of dairying and the better returns which that industry gives the farmers have conduced to improvement in the class of farm houses. Sullivan's shipbuilding yard on the Lansdowne River gives quite a flavour of metropolitan commerce to the township. The timber industry gives employment to, perhaps, 250 men, and up the Lansdowne River, Langley Brothers have what is reputed to be the finest mill on the coast, having five mills, and their own river steamer. There is a sixth mill at Coopernook, owned by the traditional family of the place, the Newtons. Their interests in the immediate district are represented by possession of a good half of the place. The mill is theirs, the biggest farms are theirs, although, perhaps the biggest purchase was Coopernook cattle station, owned by Michael Caffrey."
From a farming viewpoint, like most of the Manning River district, beef cattle and maize growing were the staple prior to the establishment of the dairying industry. In 1897 Coopernook built its own creamery and supplied the Lower Manning Co-operative Dairy Company, resulting in regular monthly "milk cheques" which totally changed the economics to the town.
Those who earned their income via the timber industry found that they had to venture further and wider into the forests for their logs. Langley Brothers set up tram lines and steam engine to transport these logs back to their mills, which was an innovative system, although obviously not appreciated by everyone, as on one occasion these tram lines were sabotaged by an unknown arsonist. The timber industry was subject to supply and demand, when it was booming Langley Brothers mills were a great asset to the district, when demand decreased the mills either greatly reduced their production or closed completely, affecting the disposable income of the employees, consequently affecting the finances of the whole district. Langley Brothers needed ships to transport their timber to the cities, and some of these were locally built at the Coopernook shipyards by Denis Sullivan, such as the "Gwendoline", and the "Duroby".
Denis Sullivan, was a prolific builder of vessels, utilising mostly locally harvested hardwood timbers at Coopernook - 19 of his ships are recorded in this book. "Dennie" was held in the highest esteem by local residents and ship owners, as chronicled in the report of the launch of the "Ellerslie" in July, 1906, where the Manning River Times journalist noted -"The fact that Messrs. Allen Taylor and Co., placed the order in Mr. Sullivan's hands without having seen the design, or the boat in progress of building, shows the implicit confidence this firm place in Mr. Sullivan, and also speaks in the highest terms of the manner in which he has completed former orders."
This book includes the aspirations and successes of the residents of
Coopernook and the district improvements, as recorded by the newspapers
of the day. Some of the articles transcribed include the effects of the
1866 flood, the establishment of the schools at Cattai Creek in 1872 and
Coopernook in 1877, the granting of fees to be collected by the Coopernook
Ferry in 1875, the successful movement for bridges, the building of churches,
court house, police station, cattle sale yards, rifle range, school of
arts, the establishment of banks, opening of bacon factory, rice growing,
typhoid outbreak, formation of debating society, dramatic club, orchestral
society, brass band, flower shows, and the building of the Federal Hotel.
Also chronicled is the community support given by Mrs. Leys, publican of
the Coopernook Hotel, in establishing many of the Coopernook sporting and
recreation facilities for cricket, swimming, horse racing, cycling, and
football, - the Coopernook footballers were premiers in 1907. Other reports
feature the laying of the foundation stone of the Masonic Temple, establishment
of hare coursing, the deaths of pioneers, the rebuilding of the Coopernook
Hotel, and visit of the Governor and the establishing of Australia's first
National Forest by an act of Parliament.
