Newspaper archivists, Rod and Wendy Gow, while indexing the Manning River newspapers, extracted the reports of the four largest  floods that have devestated the valley over the past 140 years.

These reports detail the names of residents and visitors who were affected by the flood waters, as well as those involved in rescue work, and will be of great interest to family historians.

The following is the foreword from this book

Foreword.

Like most coastal river systems, the Manning Valley is regularly visited by floods varying from small inundations that cause only inconvenience and very little damage, through to 'significant floods' which can have disastrous effects on residents, property owners, commercial and agricultural production. The fact that the Manning is a delta, - that is, with two outlets to the sea, (the only such system in the southern hemisphere) - makes this river somewhat different during floods - if the Old Bar outlet is not blocked due to the build up of sand. After each of the record floods there is a move to keep this entrance open, but in each case nature eventually blocks it off and the various government departments claim the cost of maintaining the free flow of water in and out of the inlet is not economical.

The four Manning Valley record floods, occurred in the years 1866, 1929, 1930 and 1978, all with equally disastrous effects on residents, property and livestock. In 1930, with the lessons learned in 1929 still fresh in their minds, the residents were well prepared and with the flood warning issued by the  Weather Bureau, published in the Manning River Times, steps were immediately taken to reduce possible losses of life and property.

During the 1866 flood eleven men were drowned at sea as a result of the wreck of the ship "Eclipse" in the easterly gale that accompanied the torrential rainfall and subsequent flood, their bodies washed on to Mitchell's Island and those recovered were buried without coffins on the beach. In the 1929 flood two men lost their lives whilst crossing floodwaters, one at Cooplacurripa the other on Oxley Island, and two were drowned at Gloucester attempting to evacuate people trapped in a hotel. Thankfully, the 1930 and  1978 floods did not directly claim a single life. In 1930 and 1978 the Old Bar entrance was open.

This book is compiled from the reports printed in Manning Valley newspapers, namely The Manning River News, The Manning River Times and the Wingham Chronicle. The editors of these newspapers brought news of the havoc wrought on the district and the response by the community - which apart from making interesting reading - serves to remind us that these floods have - and will again in the future - take their toll on the Manning and its residents.

A recurring comment by the editors of our local newspapers in each of these record flood reports is the rise in the river due to the deluge occurred at an extremely fast rate - 6 feet (1.8 metres) an hour is mentioned in several articles. When the flood occurs during the dark hours of the night, the population in outlying districts may receive little or no warning, and the first some residents are aware of impending danger, is a torrent of water flowing around or through their houses.

In the 1929 flood, Taree registered over 20 inches of rain in six days. This volume of rainfall fell uniformly over the whole of the valley, - and in fact extended to the Camden Haven, Hastings and Macleay Rivers in similar volumes. The Taree council area alone covers over 900,000 acres and 20 inches rainfall would amount to over 450 billion gallons - the bulk of which, as run off from the land, heads for the ocean down the Manning and its tributaries, with the obvious outcome being a record flood.

The district during such times inevitably has people trapped by the floodwaters, however, thankfully, there are those members of the community that rise admirably to the occasion and perform gallant rescues - with little concern for their own safety - evacuating trapped families in water logged houses or from roof tops, delivering food and fresh water to those marooned on high ground surrounded by fast flowing floodwaters, cutting fences to allow livestock to gain higher ground, and as soon as the flood waters recede, organising assistance to the victims in need of food, clothing and shelter, and then aiding in  clearing debris and mud from houses.

These record floods are classed as a '1 in 100' flood. Thankfully we have not experienced the predicted '1 in 500' - and the '1 in 1000' flood is too frightening to contemplate - nature could serve either of these up at any time, catching a complacent community totally off guard, with devastating consequences.
