Over the past decade, while indexing and reading the Maitland Mercury newspaper, we have collected articles by this newspaper's own correspondents reporting from the Manning.
From December, 1873, we found many published extracts sourced from the Manning River News, and from January, 1869, extracts sourced from the Manning Times. These rediscovered articles are the subject of this volume.
Survival of the editions of the "Times" did not fare well. With just a few exceptions, all of the editions between 1869 and 1897, have succumbed to the ravages of time - a great loss of our district's history. These rediscovered published extracts have added considerably to the history of the Manning River, Great Lakes and surrounding districts.
This book records a myriad of events, from the escape of a large flood in 1876 where the "Times" recorded "... The water was running at a great rate, and as it could make its exodus out of two channels it relieved us to a very great extent - indeed we may look upon this circumstance as our salvation ...", to the opening of the erection of the new Wesleyan Church in Albert Street, Taree, in 1881. The sugar cane industry, which was thought to have failed in the Manning following extensive heavy frosts in 1873, appears to have continued for at least another seven years. The "Times" reports in 1876 on the sugar mills on Dumaresque Island, and in 1879 "This season's crop of sugar cane looks splendid, and the yield is expected to turn out well this year. Crushing will commence next week" and in 1880 of a worker's hand caught in the machinery of a sugar crusher on Mitchell's Island requiring amputation of several fingers.
Reports of vessels built and launched on the Manning and at Forster, including the forced launch of the "Christina Gollan" in the flood of July, 1884, and the launch of Thomas Snowdon's ship the "Snowdrop" on 9 August, 1877.
Other articles detail the deaths of many of the early Manning pioneers, opening of saw mills, reports of Agricultural shows, arrival of the telegraph in the Manning, discovery of kerosene shale, erections of wharves at Tinonee and Wingham, rice growing, building of Taree Presbyterian Church and the Roman Catholic Presbytery, opening of the Cedar Party Church of England, the laying of the foundation of the Taree Protestant Hall, regattas, foot races, earthquakes, snake attacks, rescues of sailors from shipwrecks, Cundletown arson attack, and reports from gold diggings at Cooplacurripa, The Cells, Copeland, Barrington and Coolongolook.
Also included is a condensed life history from their research of Horace Dean, the Manning River's first newspaper proprietor, who, at Tinonee, founded the Manning River News newspaper in 1865, which was originally intended by Dean to be named the Hastings Banner newspaper.
To researchers newspapers are an extremely important resource, as what was then published as current affairs, is now a record of much sought after history.
All of these "rediscovered" articles from the "Times" and the "News" are included in this book, with the exception of those that referred only to weather reports and seasonal agricultural crop planting. We hope that the reader enjoys them and that they add to their family history, and also, to the history of the Manning Valley, Great Lakes, and surrounding districts.
